How did you spend the winter solstice? We had a slow start after a busy day yesterday, but were on the road to Meteor Crater by 10:30 am. On the way, we found the trailhead for the West Fork Oak Creek hike, and decided to stop. Four hours later we emerged from an incredible 8-mile trek, out-and-back, through the box canyon. My advice: pack plenty of snacks. Oh, and Meteor Crater will wait for another day.

oh – what photos!!! is that water or snow in the creek?!
Snow on the trail. Water in the creek. The crossings were slippery with crusty ice on the rocks. We went carefully, no one dunked.
