July 9, 2023 was the 114th anniversary of my grandfather’s birthday. When I was a kid spending summers in Rockport, July was the month of blueberries. My grandfather picked them in the swamp at Dogtown, and my grandmother baked them: blueberry pie, blueberry dumplings, and blueberry muffins. We ate them all without complaint. A favorite memory is sitting on the back porch steps with cousins and friends, eating blueberry muffins right out of the oven, our fingers, faces, and tongues turning blue.
